Online Dating is when people meet potential romantic partners on internet-based dating platforms or apps. This can take the form of finding casual dates or forming long-term relationships. It is a popular method for meeting new people and can be very effective at forming romantic relationships but it does come with some negative consequences and risks. It also requires a lot of time and effort and can be difficult to find a compatible match. Despite these concerns, there are many positive aspects to Online Dating, including expanding a social network, meeting people outside of one’s immediate social circle, and having access to people who may otherwise be out of one’s reach. To understand more about the habits of people using Online Dating, Kaspersky Lab has reviewed the literature and found eleven studies that have explored the patterns and motivations for use. These are mostly quantitative studies, many which have been cross-sectional (Blackhart et al. 2014; Chan 2017; Corriero and Tong 2016; Gunter 2008; Hance et al. 2018; Hwang 2013).
